Answers questions about the various forms and log books required as an Engineer.
Q:What is a IYT log book ?
A:
An IYT log book is the International Yachtmaster Training and Deliveries Personal Seatime Log Book for the recording of the candidates qualifying yacht service, as referred to in the engineering eligibility requirements.
This is an MCA approved logbook and can be purchased from International Yacht Training.
 
 
Q:What is a RYA log book ?
A:
A RYA log book is the Royal Yacht Association Motor Cruising and Yachtmaster Logbook.
It explains the new syllabus for the RYA Day and Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Motor Cruising Courses.
There is also space inside for personal log and course completion certificates.

Q:What is an MN Discharge Book ?
A:
The MN Discharge Book is a Seaman''s Discarge Book issued by the MCA to UK registered seamen.
It is a record of the sea service carried out by the seaman during his/her career at sea.
Q:What is MGN 156 ?
A:
MGN 156 is Marine Guidance Notice number 156 issued by the MCA.
It is entitled Training and Certification Guidance - Part 17 Certificates of Competency or Marine Engine Operator Licenses for Service as an Engineer Officer on Commercially and Privately Operated Yachts and Sail Training Vessels.

Q:What is a notice of eligibility ?
A:
All candidates for certificates of competency and marine engineer operator licenses must have their eligibility assessed by the MCA and be issued with a Notice of Eligibility (NOE) prior to undertaking any approved education and training modules. Candidates are also required to hold an NOE prior to taking any written or oral examination.
Application forms for a NOE, together with an information pack, may be obtained from the MCA Seafarer Standards Branch and online at www.mcga.gov.uk
Completed application forms, accompanied by the appropriate fee, evidence of required ancillary training, medical fitness, details of yacht service, yacht service testimonials and craft apprenticeship details, if any, and other documents listed in the application form, must be sent to the Seafarer Standards Branch, allowing 28 days for processing.
Q:What should a testimonial from a Master (Captain), Owner or Superintendent include or cover ?
A:
An example of a testimonial pro-forma is given in Annex B of Marine Guidance Notice 156 (MGN 156).
An Engineer Officer testimonial should include the candidate''s full name; date of birth; name of yacht or sail training vessel, length, gross tonnage, propulsion power (kW), type of main engines, type of auxiliary engines, date of joining and date of leaving on which the candidate has served.
During this total on board time, the length of time in months spent in the capacity of chief engineer, second engineer or engineer watchkeeper.
The amount of actual sea service time.
A signature and printed name of the Captain, Owner or Superintendent stating that the candidate is able to converse and write in the English language.
The position of the person signing the testimonial and the name of the owning/managing company.
A yacht or company legal stamp and dated.
 
Q:What is the form MSF 4278 ?
A:MSF 4278 was the application form used for an Oral Examination but this has since been superceded by the Notice of Eligibility (NOE) which is issued by the MCA when the candidate has shown himself or herself to be eligible for all the written and oral exams applicable to the particular certificate of comptency or licence which the candidate is seeking.
